“Fish” by Shitkid is number two on this list by lu!

Las mujeres que me rockearon el 2017. El listado contiene a 10 solistas / bandas que están conformadas con mujeres. De todas ellas, pude escuchar en vivo a las primeras 7 y sí, todas suenan también como en sus discos.

Guatemala is a country where you must work hard to make a living. But if you are an artist, you must work twice as hard. Why? Because you can’t live a decent life just from your music. Instead, you have to work everyday in a normal job to buy the guitar chords that you will use on the weekend. But that’s not something that has stopped the production of great Guatemalan music. In fact, 2017 gave us a handfull of pretty good records and bunch of amazing songs. This is the top 10 rock tunes from my country that I listened throughout this year. I hope you like it as much as I did.

  1. Miles Away / Soapbox

The great project from Rodrigo Rosales. Soapbox gave us cool riffs and smooth lyrics with “Miles Away”

  1. Perplejo / Bohemia Suburbana

Bohemia Suburbana is the most influencial rock band from Guatemala. This song is from their last album, “Imaginaria Sonora”.

  1. Duquesa de Plata / Los Tiros

This is our surf-western rock band. No lyrics. Just good music.

  1. La buena vibra / Los Reyes Vagos

To celebrate their 10 years of existence, Los Reyes Vagos recorded this song with Pato Machete, a Mexican fellow who sings like nobody.

  1. Domingo, cruel domingo / The Killer Tomato

Who doesn’t like ska? The Killer Tomato makes good ska. Let’s dance!

  1. Cuadro de abstinencia / KIN

KIN is, without a doubt, the best rock and roll perfomers in Guatemala right now. Dig it!

  1. Bajo Control / El Clubo

Sharp guitars and a great voice. El Clubo has it all.

  1. On a row / Hot Sugar Mama

For several years Hot Sugar Mama have given us amazing songs. “On a row” is one of them.

  1. El Club de los Desquiciados / Viernes Verde

Viernes Verde is one of the most loved bands in Guatemala. 25 years of hard work and they won’t stop soon.

  1. Bit of power / Filoxera

Filoxera realesed this year one hell of an album: “Collective Awakening” and “Bit of power” is just that, a bit of the good music you’ll find in that album.

ROAR’s Best of 2017

Looking back, it seems I only get off my arse to put a list together in odd-numbered years! In any case, here’s my 2017 top 20, reposted from my blog:

20. Death Grips – Steroids (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Gabber Megamix)

Another year, another mental Death Grips release. This 22-minute continuous mix sees the group at their most inventive, tossing off insane beats and memorable hooks at breakneck pace.

19. METZ – Strange Peace

Surprisingly tuneful noise-rock. Best played very loud.

18. Morbid Angel – Kingdoms Disdained

A return to brutal form after the poorly received Illud Divinum Insanus.

17. Mark Lanegan Band – Gargoyle

Reliably excellent album from one of the best voices in rock.

16. Special Request – Belief System

A sprawling journey from bass-heavy breakbeat to moody ambience.

15. Ride – Weather Diaries

Cracking return from the shoegaze legends, with swirling guitars and gorgeous vocal harmonies.

14. Propagandhi – Victory Lap

I didn’t listen to Propagandhi the first time around, so this was a very pleasant surprise. Intelligent melodic hardcore.

13. dälek – Asphalt for Eden

Another welcome return from one of my all-time favourites, dälek are the perfect blend of noise, hip hop and industrial.

12. Laura Marling – Semper Femina

Incredible set from a talented songwriter, with probably the best opening track of the year in “Soothing”.

11. Colin Stetson – All This I Do For Glory

Rhythmic, pulsating and emotionally affecting experimental saxophony.

10. River Black – River Black

River Black is a new project from 3/4 of metalcore legends Burnt by the Sun, with a more simple and direct sound that mixes in some doomy, atmospheric touches to good effect. Needless to say, it kicks ass.

9. Blanck Mass – World Eater

Second solo LP from Benjamin John Power of Fuck Buttons, taking drone and noise and making it weirdly danceable.

8. Various Artists – Remixes [Central Processing Unit]

A remix compilation from Sheffield electro label Central Processing Unit. Picked it up cos it sounded intriguing, and it’s been on constant loop in my running iPod ever since.

7. King Krule – The OOZ

This album has such an awesome vibe; a weird mix of lounge jazz, post punk and anxiety. Clicked with me as soon as I heard it.

6. Moses Sumney – Aromanticism

Moses Sumney’s music is beautiful, emotional, meaningful… and what a voice!

5. Charly Bliss – Guppy

Easily the most fun album I listened to all year.

4. Björk – Utopia

After the pain of Vulnicura, Björk’s latest album is full of hope. Once again produced with Arca, Utopia is a meandering but enthralling tour de force.

3. Kelela – Take Me Apart

Kelela’s long-awaited debut is less production heavy than her Fade to Mind mixtape, Cut4Me, but that simply allows her voice and songwriting to shine.

2. Converge – The Dusk In Us / Eve

Converge’s latest album is everything you’d expect from them – devastating, emotional, inspiring. I fucking love it. But the best song they released in 2017 – and possibly their best song ever – was a B-side:

1. Oxbow – The Thin Black Duke

This was a strong year, with so many of my all-time favourite bands releasing remarkable albums (many of which didn’t make the cut). But there was only ever one contender for top place. Oxbow truly outdid themselves with this astonishing release, combining orchestral instrumentation with a cinematic scope to paint a truly vivid narrative.

Best of the Rest

At the risk of repeating myself, there was a lot of good music this year. Here’s the rest of my top 50:

  1. Godflesh – Post Self
  2. Mutoid Man – War Moans
  3. Re-TROS – Before The Applause
  4. Ex Eye – Ex Eye
  5. Chelsea Wolfe – Hiss Spun
  6. Spoon – Hot Thoughts
